Artist Statement

Art has always been the work of my soul. Whether in my own creative process or aiding in the healing of another art has always spoken the deepest truths. It allows freedom in areas wherein words often inhibit or restrict. In my own painting I let the colors and movement create the piece. Whether it is the inspirational beauty of nature, the struggles of being human, or some combination thereof, I let my paints speak.  Throughout my work I explore the deeper essence of the human spirit. Artist Bio

Phoenix Helm Simpson started this life in the Midwest with the Art Institute of Chicago her “home away from home”.  Her pursuit of art did not take on a traditional academic approach as she chose to explore the inner workings of the human mind and spirit through study psychology and world religions.  She received a BA in Psychology from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a MA in Clinical Psychology from John F Kennedy University in Orinda, CA.   She spent a semester abroad enjoying the wealth of art and music in Vienna, Austria.  Although she did not pursue a degree in Fine Arts, Phoenix would take classes in different media.  In this way, she could incorporate new lessons while keeping art for herself as a refuge without preconception or judgment on the “ correct” ways of creating her works.  The three lessons she felt were instrumental in her progress as an artist were 1) it is ok to work on more than one piece at a time  2) do not be afraid to use more paint  3) invest in good brushes and paper.  These lessons have allowed to her to create bold, vibrant, expressive watercolors.  The most common question she encounters when exhibiting is “How do you do this?”  This question usually relates to the color and freedom expressed in her work. The freedom comes from years of self -study and exploration within the fields of psychology and spirit to try and touch the essence of healing that transcends human pain.  The color comes from using high quality paper and paints.

Her current works are divided into five categories:
